How Evan Cox Approaches Authentic Business Growth

Marketing often gets a bad rap, but Evan Cox brings a refreshingly authentic approach to helping businesses and nonprofits tell their stories.

As a StoryBrand Certified Guide with over fifteen years of experience, Evan believes that marketing, when done right, is simply an avenue to create and build more relationships – no sleazy tactics, no ambiguous metrics.

Evan’s journey into entrepreneurship began with a simple observation at his children’s preschool. Noticing their website was broken, he proposed a trade: website development for tuition assistance. This practical problem-solving approach would become a hallmark of his consulting style.

Recently, Even and I had a conversation. About his clients that come to him for his expertise, he explains, “A lot of my clients are bought in on the outcome or one of the possible tactics to get to that outcome. But there’s a wide chasm between ‘I want to accomplish this’ and ‘I’m not quite sure how to make the whole process work to actually get there.'”

One of his most powerful insights from our conversation came from his approach to getting unstuck. “I choose not to be confused,” he shares, crediting this mindset shift to a mentor. When faced with uncertainty, Evan advocates for de-risking decisions by breaking them down into smaller, manageable steps.

Beyond his professional insights, Evan offers a glimpse into how he maintains work-life balance while running a successful consulting business. His morning routine includes reading affirmations that keep him grounded, including the powerful reminder “don’t internalize the hurry” and “don’t miss the little moments today, because they will become tomorrow’s biggest regrets.”

This philosophy translates into practical actions, like setting aside time when his daughter returns from school, even if it means adjusting his work schedule. “I’m trying to not miss the little moments that feel insignificant in the middle of all the chaos,” he says, “because I feel like tomorrow that could become the biggest regret if I’m not careful.”

For those hesitating to take their first step in business or marketing, Evan’s advice is practical: identify low-risk ways to move forward. Whether it’s changing a website headline or posting on social media, many digital marketing decisions aren’t as final as they might seem.
